Active Listening Skills

The Business of Listening

Experts quote studies that verify we listen more than any other activity, except breathing. If you find that you listen to people, but don't really hear, it's time to sharpen this communication tool. Active listeners benefit by being better able to understand problems, sustain attention, retain information, clarify procedures, and build relationships.

In this class you will learn to:

  • Focus on the other person
  • Become more objective to the conversation
  • Listen in a way that signals "I'm listening" to others
  • Hear what is being said -- loud and clear

Seminar tips:

  • A good technique for building rapport with speakers is to "pace" or imitate their gestures, speaking rate, and volume. You focus on the speaker instead of yourself.
  • Learn your emotional "hot buttons." Certain issues will cause you to become emotionally charged and prevent you from listening effectively.
  • Develop the posture of an active listener. Lean toward the speaker, maintain eye contact, and nod when appropriate. By forcing yourself to do these things, you will soon find that you do them naturally and consistently.
